Round Mountain from South Trailhead - Summit Challenge #2

All are welcome on this hike, even if you are not participating in the Summit Challenge.

When: Monday, June 22, 7:30am-5:30pm We will leave the parking lot of Holy Trinity Catholic Church (18143 Cottonwood Road) at 7:30 for the drive to the trailhead which is about 45 minutes past Prineville. Bring $4 for the driver. Drivers need a NW Forest Pass.

Description: This is a 10 mile out and back with 2,100 feet of elevation gain in the lovely and less trodden Ochoco National Forest. But don't let these details scare you off! This is a beautiful hike through a mixed pine forest and some grassy meadows. The hike starts with a gradual ascent for the first mile or so where you will reach a plateau. For the next mile or so it's mostly flat or down hill where you get a nice recovery. When you enter the last couple of miles to the summit is when you earn your lunch. It's a steady climb (not too steep) to the summit. At the top you are rewarded with beautiful views (except for the giant antennae at the top where you get excellent cel reception). It is a good trail that is mostly dirt. Naturally the 2nd half of the hike (5 miles) is a mostly moderate-gradual descent.

There are no bathrooms at this trailhead. There are a couple of "outhouse" toilets at the Ochoco Ranger Station about 15 minutes before the trailhead where we can stop on the way in and out.

When considering signing up for this event, please review the specifics (e.g. distance, elevation gain, trail surface - gravel, rocky, soft sand etc.) to determine if this event matches your fitness level.

The Kick Butte Challenge consists of hiking 6 out of 8 buttes. These hikes are designed to get you ready for steeper and longer hikes as the season progresses. You may complete the challenge by hiking six of the buttes with the Hearty Soles, or hiking one or more with someone else and taking a picture of yourself at the top of the butte. You will submit the picture to Melodee Munckton at melodeem@gmail.com. At the end of season, those completing the challenge will receive a colorful bandana scarf with the year.

Kick Butte # 7 Vista Butte Hike

    When:  9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 8

We’ll meet at the Country Store parking lot to carpool to the butte, leaving promptly at 9. (The time could be earlier if the forecast is for hot weather.) Drive up Spring River Road and  continue to the Bachelor Junction. Turn right on Century Drive, go just past where the highway divides, and the vista Butte  parking  is a wide spot on the OTHER side of the road. So you need to do either a U-turn or dive down Century until you can turn around to reach the parking. Bring $4 to pay drivers.

Description:  For a hike that’s just short of five miles roundtrip and a little over 600 feet of  elevation gain (633), the reward at the top  of Vista Butte is great -- outstanding views at 6,619 feet.  Much of the hike is on mountain bike trails, but they’re not generally busy.  The trail is not particularly rocky. There is a kick-up in elevation  just  before you reach the top.

When considering signing up for this hike, please review the specifics (e.g. distance, elevation gain, trail surface - gravel, rocky, soft sand etc.) to determine if this trail meets your fitness level.

Gear:  Wear sturdy boots and  layered clothing, bring a hat, sunscreen and mosquito repellant and plenty of water. It could be windy at the summit. We recommend hiking poles. We’ll settle in at the top for a snack or lunch and wander around to take in the views.

    Deschutes River Cleanup in Sunriver

We have an opportunity to join this annual cleanup of our wonderful river.  Read on!

    Deschutes River Cleanup

    When:  Saturday, July 11, 9 am – 1 pm

    Where:  Sunriver Marina

Why:  From the Watershed Council:  A special day for watershed stewards to get their hands dirty and feet wet, the 30th annual Deschutes River Cleanup is focused on cleaning up the river we all love. The Deschutes River Cleanup is the annual opportunity for us to come together with community members, local businesses, and our partners to steward the Deschutes River and its riparian areas. A dramatic increase in recreation in and around the Deschutes River has led to increased debris in the river and along its streambanks. In order to keep our river beautiful and protect riparian habitat conditions and water quality for fish and wildlife, the Watershed Council coordinates the Deschutes River Cleanup every year. Our goal is to raise community awareness about the role that humans play, both positively and negatively, to impact the health of the Deschutes.

To participate in the annual clean up in our own Sunriver area, we need the following volunteers:  Participants:  2-3 leaders to organize 2-3 groups of women (about 12 in each group) for instream debris removal and removal of invasive plant species on the river banks.  Supplies are provided.  If we have an instream removal team, we would use our own kayaks.

Registration:  We will register and sign a release on the River Clean up website. BUT FIRST, to determine how many volunteers we have, sign up here on Wild Apricot.  We will then coordinate with Watershed Council.  The Council needs a head count by the end of April.  They will then determine what specific cleanup we will do.  They will also then provide me the link for signing up directly with them.

Join us for Pétanque and Happy Hour at Mary McCallum Park. If you don't know how to play, we will have instructors and/or experienced players from the Petanque Club assisting (when available) and providing instruction for whatever levels are needed.

We will have this event the last Wednesday of the month June - September.  A new event will be created for each event day and sign ups will be needed for each event. Feel free to sign up for all of them when they become available.

    What is Pétanque?

Pétanque is a boules sport where players, standing within a circle, throw metal balls (boules) as close as possible to a smaller target ball (the cochonnet or jack). The game is played on a rough surface, like gravel or sand. The team with the boules closest to the cochonnet scores points, and the first team to reach 13 points wins.

When:  Wednesday, September 30th (Petanque and Happy Hour - SEPTEMBER)

Where:   Mary McCallum Park - meet us there.  Someone will be attending the gate to allow entrance.
