This ride is designed as an entry-level introduction to Bend’s trail system. It’s a very approachable route for riders getting acquainted with Bend’s terrain, with enough features to offer a true introduction to local singletrack. Bird Watching in Sunriver

    When:Wednesday June 10, 7:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Where: Meet at 7:00 a.m. at the Sunriver Nature Center Parking lot.  We will then carpool to the location.

Description: We will be bird watching with Sunriver Nature Center Birder Sevilla Rhoads.  Sevilla is a wealth of information, just ask anyone who has gone bird watching with her.  This is another prime time of year for bird watching.  Hundreds of thousands of birds migrate through our area daily during migration time.  Some stay, some continue on.  The birds travel during the coolness of the night, feed in the early morning and rest during the heat of the day.  There are dozens of species easily seen practically right out your back door.  During the last event, we identified at least 30 different species and over 165 individual birds including the elusive kildeer.

We could be walking on ground that is a little uneven but walking is not the highlight.  Most of the time you will be looking in the air and surrounding trees and shrubbery of birds.  Sevilla will identify the birds for you and you will be provided with the complete list at some point after the event.

The event will cost a total of $60 which we will split between the attendees.  If there are 6 attendees, that would be $10 each.

When considering signing up for this event, please review the specifics (e.g. distance, elevation gain, trail surface - gravel, rocky, soft sand etc.) to determine if this trail meets your fitness level.

Gear:  Binoculars, Water, sturdy hiking shoes, layered clothing, insect repellent.  Bring a camera with a telephoto lense if you wish.

    Leader: Carol Bealessio phone 562-506-5827

Mountain Biking: Ascents and Descents Clinic #2

    When:  9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 10, 2026

Info: Meet at the Sunriver Homeowners’ member pool on West Core Road. Roll-out time is 9:45 a.m. There is parking available across the street from the member pool.

The clinic will last approximately 2.5 hours.

Description: We are lucky to live by many mountain bike trails. One of the closest mountain bike trails is the Roundabout trail. The Roundabout trail is  considered an intermediate trail mostly because of its ascents and descents and rock gardens.

During this clinic, we will be sessioning ascents and descents only. We will NOT ride the entire Roundabout trail. The first .66 mile of this ride is a fairly level single-track trail. From the .66 mile mark to the 1.21 mile mark, the trail ascends from grades that vary between 1% and 7%. At the 1.21 mile mark, we will rest, hydrate and debrief the ascent. After assessing the group, we will decide if we will practice a descent to the Elko viewpoint or practice our descent back to the starting point.

Bring water and snacks. A helmet is required. A front suspension or full suspension bike with a dropper post is also required.  Sunriver Sports and Village Bike and Ski may offer discounts to those of you who mention you are taking this class through the SRWC Mountain Biking Club. They may not carry full suspension bikes or bikes with dropper posts, however,  Sunnyside Sports on Newport Avenue in Bend does carry a limited supply of rental full suspension bikes with dropper posts. Make sure that the bike shop adjusts the dropper post to your height.

Before you arrive for the ride, please read the guidelines for mountain bike group rides here. If you need a visual reminder on commonly used bike signals, it’s available here.

    Gear:

Bring your bike, helmet (required), sunglasses, layered clothing, personal first aid supplies, sunscreen, water and snacks.

park as close to the launch as possible. If you prefer to drop your gear first,

the leader will have a designated dropoff spot at the shuttle stop near the

    and walk back.

For inflatables, the leader will have two electric pumps available to help

inflate boards if needed. We’ll spend about 20 minutes getting boards

inflated and gear organized before getting on the water by 11:00am.

    Description:

1.5 – 2 hour paddle.  Easy to Intermediate.

Join us for a relaxed kayak excursion through the heart of Bend, beginning

Colorado Avenue Bridge. This section has a gentle current that’s easy to

manage at a steady, conversational pace. After reaching the bridge, we’ll

turn and enjoy a smooth downstream glide back through the park.

From there, we’ll loop around Mirror Pond, exploring its historic homes, calm

natural shoreline, and postcardworthy views. The full route covers

approximately 2.0–2.5 miles, depending on how much of the pond we

    choose to explore.

MidSoles Hike: Chasing the Blooms to Gold Lake Bog & Salt Creek Falls

     When: Friday, June 12, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

At Salt Creek Falls, we will keep it short and do a 1-mile round-trip to Salt Creek Falls with a 335-foot elevation change. The reason to go here is to see the second-tallest waterfalls in Oregon and the plentiful rhododendrons in bloom in mid-June. Over 100 plant species have been reported here.

Round Mountain from South Trailhead - Summit Challenge #2

All are welcome on this hike, even if you are not participating in the Summit Challenge.

When: Monday, June 22, 7:30am-5:30pm We will leave the parking lot of Holy Trinity Catholic Church (18143 Cottonwood Road) at 7:30 for the drive to the trailhead which is about 45 minutes past Prineville. Bring $4 for the driver. Drivers need a NW Forest Pass.

Description: This is a 10 mile out and back with 2,100 feet of elevation gain in the lovely and less trodden Ochoco National Forest. But don't let these details scare you off! This is a beautiful hike through a mixed pine forest and some grassy meadows. The hike starts with a gradual ascent for the first mile or so where you will reach a plateau. For the next mile or so it's mostly flat or down hill where you get a nice recovery. When you enter the last couple of miles to the summit is when you earn your lunch. It's a steady climb (not too steep) to the summit. At the top you are rewarded with beautiful views (except for the giant antennae at the top where you get excellent cel reception). It is a good trail that is mostly dirt. Naturally the 2nd half of the hike (5 miles) is a mostly moderate-gradual descent.

There are no bathrooms at this trailhead. There are a couple of "outhouse" toilets at the Ochoco Ranger Station about 15 minutes before the trailhead where we can stop on the way in and out.

When considering signing up for this event, please review the specifics (e.g. distance, elevation gain, trail surface - gravel, rocky, soft sand etc.) to determine if this event matches your fitness level.

Description:  This is a 1.7 mile loop with elevation gain of 577 feet.  The trail becomes very steep near the top and slippery with gravel and dirt.  The descent near the top is similarly slippery.  Hiking poles are strongly recommended and plan to do some side stepping on the initial descent.  You can expect a good cardio challenge and a gorgeous view at the summit (or particular interest is the meadering Deschutes River from above).

Optional:  as the loop itself is rather short, if there is interest in adding some more distance, there is a lovely flat trail through the forest that we could "tack" on after the loop.

Gear: Bring water and snack, sunscreen, hiking poles (optional), hiking boots, hat, bug repellent.

Co Leaders: Mary Elizabeth Horan (310-780-1438) Janet Rathbone (503-577-2803)

    Info:

Meet at HTCC leaving at 8:00 am, drivers will need a NW Forest Pass or America the Beautiful card, $4 for carpooling

    Description:

This 7.5 mile, 1256 ft elevation gain trail goes past Tumalo Falls, Double Falls, Upper Falls, North Fork Falls, and Bridge Creek Falls, among others. Tumalo Falls, a 97-foot tall waterfall along Tumalo Creek, is one of the tallest and most beautiful waterfalls in Central Oregon. As you continue up the North Fork Trail you will pass several other waterfalls before crossing Middle Fork Tumalo Creek via a cut log bridge. Thereafter North Fork Trail passes several more waterfalls before the Swampy Lake Trail return route. The Swampy Lake Trail requires crossing Middle Fork Tumalo Creek again, this time without a bridge. Some downed trees can be used to cross but require great balance; otherwise, you have to wade through knee - thigh deep frigid water for about 50 feet. The Bend Watershed starts approximately a mile further and continues along Bridge Creek Trail until you return to North Fork Trail.

Please bring poles and/or water shoes for the creek crossings. We had no problem crossing on the log (and rocks on other sections) when we prehiked, but poles are very helpful for balance.

When considering signing up for this event, please review the specifics (e.g. distance, elevation gain, trail surface - gravel, rocky, soft sand etc.) to determine if this event matches your fitness level.

Hands to Heart Volunteer Opportunity - 4th of July Carnival in the Village

Each year the Village hosts a carnival for children on the 4th of July.  This is fun because you can see the children right after the bike parade.

The Village has asked us to sell tickets for 2.5 hour shifts.  We have three volunteer slots at two tables for a total of 6 volunteers needed for the morning shift, 10:30 - 1 and for the afternoon shift, 1:00 - 3:30.  It is a brisk paced situation, with adults buying tons of tickets at a time.

The Village makes a generous donation to our Community Grant Fund for our help on this day.

This does not involve playing or monitoring children, it is just selling tickets. This year they have upgraded to a credit card tap reader so a lot of the problems with the internet are gone.

Each table will have three chairs under a tent, two volunteers dealing with tickets, payments and the third helping keep the line moving and giving bathroom breaks.

Please sign up here for a shift:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C044BACA92DA7F8C34-64278617-4thofjuly#/

    Deschutes River Cleanup in Sunriver

We have an opportunity to join this annual cleanup of our wonderful river.  Read on!

    Deschutes River Cleanup

    When:  Saturday, July 11, 9 am – 1 pm

Where:  Mary McCullum Park and Harper's Bridge

Why:  From the Deschutes Watershed Council:  A special day for watershed stewards to get their hands dirty and feet wet, the 30th annual Deschutes River Cleanup is focused on cleaning up the river we all love. The Deschutes River Cleanup is the annual opportunity for us to come together with community members, local businesses, and our partners to steward the Deschutes River and its riparian areas. A dramatic increase in recreation in and around the Deschutes River has led to increased debris in the river and along its streambanks. In order to keep our river beautiful and protect riparian habitat conditions and water quality for fish and wildlife, the Watershed Council coordinates the Deschutes River Cleanup every year. Our goal is to raise community awareness about the role that humans play, both positively and negatively, to impact the health of the Deschutes.

To participate in the annual clean up in our own Sunriver area, we need the following volunteers:  Participants:  2-3 leaders to organize 2-3 groups of women (about 12 in each group) for instream debris removal and removal of invasive plant species on the river banks.  Supplies are provided.  If we have an instream removal team, we would use our own kayaks.

UPDATE:  We have enough volunteers to create 2 teams:  1 on water in kayaks and 1 along the streambank (for garbage and invasive species).  We will be cleaning up the river/riverbank between Harper Bridge and the SR Marina.

There will be two site hosts:  one for each team.  The hosts will provide stewardship bags, gloves, burly bags, grab sticks  The Kayak team will put in at Harper Bridge and take out at the SR owners' marina.

Eventually, we cross Fall Creek again on a footbridge in the meadow with glimpses of South Sister and Broken Top. The trail climbs through the woods for a mile returning to Fall Creek in the eerie meadow flanked by massive lava flows. • Wickiup Plain Loop Trail and Moraine Lake
    Registration is closed

Wickiup Plain Loop Trail and Moraine Lake

    When: Tuesday, August 11, 8 am-2 pm

Info : We will meet at the Sunriver Country Store parking lot and pull out at 8 am. Bring $4 for the driver. This hike will be open to 12 participants BUT is dependent on securing the needed wilderness permits. Participants will be notified a week in advance re: the number of permits secured. If less than 12 permits are secured hikers will be offered a spot on the hike based on the order of registration.

Description: This roughly 7 mile loop hike has about 1,400 feet of elevation gain and starts at the Devils Lake Trailhead in the Three Sisters Wilderness. The first 2.5 miles are a gradual ascent through coniferous forests and alpine meadows with views of South Sister. This first 2.5 miles will knock out about half of the elevation gain. The last mile or so is a push to the top where you will definitely get your cardio in. But it’s only for a little more than a mile and then you will get your recovery as we descend to Moraine Lake. We will rest on the shore of this beautiful, little, alpine lake before heading back. The return side of loop is a bit shorter and steeper than the ascent but it is all downhill.

Recent reviews on AllTrails say that the trail is good and well maintained.

When considering signing up for this event, please review the specifics (e.g. distance, elevation gain, trail surface - gravel, rocky, soft sand etc.) to determine if this event matches your fitness level.

Hike Pace = 1-2 (moderate to moderate and challenging). Due to the incline for the last mile or so to the top and the steeper decline on the way back this could be a bit challenging for some. It will be a moderately paced hike. We will take breaks as needed. It will be August and the sun can be strong so be sure to hydrate before, during anafter the hike!

Gear: Bring the usual…sunscreen, bug spray, hat, water, snacks, lunch, $ for carpooling, hiking poles and sturdy hiking shoes. Drivers will need a NW Forest Pass.

This is a must have: great clear skies & weather due to viewing amazing Mountain & Valley views dotted with lakes on both west & east sides of this semi Ridge hike. Due to the B&B Complex fire 2003 that left most of the subalpine & lodgepole trees as snags & ghost like trees, it allowed the bear grass to flourish and Vu’s of the  Cascade Mtns. After 1.4 miles which then heads more steeply up the side of an open Ridge. At the 3.5 mile, the trail finally gains the ridgetop & impressive views of Black Butte to the East, Three Sisters to the South, Maxwell Butte to the West and the tip of Three Fingered Jack. At Ridgecrest, the path traverses a steep rocky slope above the blue-green Martin Lake below. The trail then enters unburned Forest and a series of switchbacks & traverses through steep alpine country to a bend revealing first view of West face of 3 Fingered Jack. But wait, another 0.2 miles the path turns a sharper corner to an even more spectacular view. Last year from this point we were able to see over a dozen mountain goats.

    HIKE PACE:moderate and challenging

We will have this event the last Wednesday of the month June - September.  A new event will be created for each event day and sign ups will be needed for each event. Feel free to sign up for all of them when they become available.

    What is Pétanque?

Pétanque is a boules sport where players, standing within a circle, throw metal balls (boules) as close as possible to a smaller target ball (the cochonnet or jack). The game is played on a rough surface, like gravel or sand. The team with the boules closest to the cochonnet scores points, and the first team to reach 13 points wins.

When:  Wednesday, September 30th (Petanque and Happy Hour - SEPTEMBER)

    Time:    4pm to 6pm

Where:   Mary McCallum Park - meet us there.  Someone will be attending the gate to allow entrance.

What to bring:  BYOB and finger food to share

What else to bring:  Hat, water, sunscreen and mosquito spray

Equipment and instruction to be provided

Please contact Margo Butsch at mgbutsch@yahoo.com / 925-209-3964 or Gwen Gamble at grin.gamble@gmail.com / 541-977-1716 if you have any questions.
