DESCRIPTION:

This long mileage hike to the Western Base of Three Fingered Jack, the length of hike will depend on weather, and hours of daylight so approx. 11.1 to12.5 miles R/T and 1,500 ft elevation gain & in and back to TH. This is a must have: great clear skies & weather due to viewing amazing Mountain & Valley views dotted with lakes on both west & east sides of this semi Ridge hike. Due to the B&B Complex fire 2003 that left most of the subalpine & lodgepole trees as snags & ghost like trees, it allowed the bear grass to flourish and Vu’s of the  Cascade Mtns. After 1.4 miles which then heads more steeply up the side of an open Ridge. At the 3.5 mile, the trail finally gains the ridgetop & impressive views of Black Butte to the East, Three Sisters to the South, Maxwell Butte to the West and the tip of Three Fingered Jack. At Ridgecrest, the path traverses a steep rocky slope above the blue-green Martin Lake below. The trail then enters unburned Forest and a series of switchbacks & traverses through steep alpine country to a bend revealing first view of West face of 3 Fingered Jack. But wait, another 0.2 miles the path turns a sharper corner to an even more spectacular view. Last year from this point we were able to see over a dozen mountain goats.
