Bike ‘n Hike Lava Lands

When:  10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 23, 2025

Meet at the Sun Lava Trail trailhead off Circle 7 in Sunriver.  Parking is free in the adjacent gravel/dirt parking area. Here’s a link to the trail map.  You’ll see the parking area just off Circle 7 where the Deschutes River Train and the Sun-Lava Paved Path meet.

Description:

This is a bike and hike combo.  We’ll bike up the paved Sun Lava trail to Lava Lands Visitor Center, taking as many breathers as we need along the way.  At Lava Lands, we’ll lock our bikes in the bike racks and hike the easy Trail of the Molten Lands, an easy 1.2 mile hike with a 132 foot elevation gain.  We’ll have a picnic lunch at the visitor center and then cruise back down the paved path to the trail head.  The total biking distance is 11.2 miles, 5.6 each way.

Note: if we have mountain biking volunteers willing to lead an off-road descent, you’ll have the option of riding down to the trailhead on part of the Blackrock mountain bike trail.

Before you arrive for the ride, please read the guidelines for group rides here. If you need a visual reminder on commonly used bike signals, it’s available here.

Gear:

Bring your bike, bike lock, helmet (required), sunglasses, layered clothing, shoes for an easy hike, personal first aid supplies, sunscreen, bug spray, water, snacks and a bagged lunch.
