MidSoles Hike: Chasing the Blooms to Gold Lake Bog & Salt Creek Falls
When: Friday, June 12, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Meet at 8 a.m. at the Country Store parking lot. Drive time is 1.25 hours one-way. We plan to have lunch at Shelter Cove on Odell Lake. Estimated to return to Sunriver by 3-4 p.m.
Description:
Gold Lake Bog is notable for being home to a few native carnivorous plants like bladderworts and sundews. Peak wildflower bloom is typically from early June into early August. The trail is 1 mile out and back with less than 50 feet of elevation gain. Over 100 plant species have been reported here. It’s a bog, so be prepared for mosquitoes and wet ground.
At Salt Creek Falls, we will keep it short and do a 1-mile round-trip to Salt Creek Falls with a 335-foot elevation change. The reason to go here is to see the second-tallest waterfalls in Oregon and the plentiful rhododendrons in bloom in mid-June. Over 100 plant species have been reported here.
When considering signing up for this hike, please review the specifics (e.g., distance, elevation gain, trail surface - gravel, rocky, soft sand, etc.) to determine if this trail meets your fitness level.
Gear: Bring $5 for the driver and money for lunch, water, snacks, hiking shoes appropriate for muddy trail, layered clothing, personal first aid supplies, and insect repellent.
