Come enjoy friends, nature and BIRDS while supporting the longest running citizen scientific survey in the world.
Conservationists initiated the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) as a way of promoting conservation by counting, rather than hunting, birds on Christmas Day of 1900. The CBC now happens in over 20 countries in the western hemisphere! Read about the history here. Now a long-standing program of the National Audubon Society, with over 120 years of community science involvement, it is an early-winter bird census, where thousands of volunteers across the U.S., Canada (where Audubon partners with Birds Canada), and many countries in the Western Hemisphere go out over a 24-hour period on one calendar day between December 14 and January 1 to count birds.
Experience birders or not, join our small group. Partners welcome. [Grandkids visiting? There is a group forming for any particularly outdoorsy teens, led by two 15-year-old boys. Contact the Nature Center for more information.]
We’ll start at the Education Center at the Sunriver Nature Center with coffee, and an orientation. Then we’ll head out to our route at Mary McCallum Park. If you want to study up before the event here are some opportunities:
- Take a look at the Deschutes County hotspot lists on Ebird: Sunriver Resort, Sunriver Marina and Sunriver Nature Center. See photos of the species that are typically seen here in December.
- Take a stroll to preview our projected route: From Mary McCallum Park to Harper’s Bridge, back along the airport road. (Meeting place is Nature Center!)
