The Kick Butte Challenge consists of hiking 6 out of 8 buttes. These hikes are designed to get you ready for steeper and longer hikes as the season progresses. You may complete the challenge by hiking six of the buttes with the Hearty Soles, or hiking one or more with someone else and taking a picture of yourself at the top of the butte. You will submit the picture to Melodee Munckton at melodeem@gmail.com. At the end of season, those completing the challenge will receive a colorful bandana scarf with the year.
Kick Butte # 7 Vista Butte Hike
When: 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 8
We’ll meet at the Country Store parking lot to carpool to the butte, leaving promptly at 9. (The time could be earlier if the forecast is for hot weather.) Drive up Spring River Road and continue to the Bachelor Junction. Turn right on Century Drive, go just past where the highway divides, and the vista Butte parking is a wide spot on the OTHER side of the road. So you need to do either a U-turn or dive down Century until you can turn around to reach the parking. Bring $4 to pay drivers.
Description: For a hike that’s just short of five miles roundtrip and a little over 600 feet of elevation gain (633), the reward at the top of Vista Butte is great -- outstanding views at 6,619 feet. Much of the hike is on mountain bike trails, but they’re not generally busy. The trail is not particularly rocky. There is a kick-up in elevation just before you reach the top.
When considering signing up for this hike, please review the specifics (e.g. distance, elevation gain, trail surface - gravel, rocky, soft sand etc.) to determine if this trail meets your fitness level.
Gear: Wear sturdy boots and layered clothing, bring a hat, sunscreen and mosquito repellant and plenty of water. It could be windy at the summit. We recommend hiking poles. We’ll settle in at the top for a snack or lunch and wander around to take in the views.
