MidSoles Hike: SMITH ROCK HOMESTEAD TRAIL

When: Friday October 2  8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the SCF Church parking lot at 18139 Cottonwood Rd to carpool or meet at 9:30 a.m. at the trailhead. Bring $5 for the driver if carpooling.

Description:

SMITH ROCK HOMESTEAD TRAIL-4.8 miles round trip with multiple options to shorten. 250 ft elevation. Trail stays low along the Crooked River. Park at the far northern end and locate the trail at the apex of the turn-around. Descend a short section of switchbacks to the river and turn left to go toward the center of the park. Within a half mile, you’ll pass by the footbridge. Instead of crossing, keep straight along the southern side of the river onto the Canyon Trail. Turn back where the river bends away from the trail, turn right at the Rope de Lope trail to the Rim Rock trial and turn left.  Continue on the Rim Rock Trail for half a mile to the end of this trail and turn left and down The Chutes and back to the Homestead trial.  Turn right back to the parking lot.  This is a wonderful route for both hiking and photography as it offers so many angles of the impressive southern side of the rock formations.  Best hiked spring & fall.

When considering signing up for this hike, please review the specifics (e.g. distance, elevation gain, trail surface - gravel, rocky, soft sand etc.) to determine if this trail meets your fitness level.

Gear:  Water, snacks, $ for going out to lunch afterwards (optional), hiking poles (optional), sturdy hiking shoes, layered clothing, personal first aid supplies, insect repellent.
