Hearty Soles -Black Canyon/Painted Hills Chasing the Blooms Hike
When: 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday, April 20.
Info: 7 a.m. Monday, April 20. Meet at the Catholic church parking lot on Cottonwood. It is a 2+ hour drive to the trailhead, south of Mitchell. If time permits, we'll stop at the Painted Hills National Monument. No parking pass required.
Description:
This is the first of a series of wildflower hikes in our new Chasing the Blooms Challenge. The focus is to identify as many wildflower species as possible.
This is not an improved trail. There is a wandering 3-mile path that follows a vernal creek through a box canyon, ending at a waterfall with an option to climb through it to the Sutton Rim. Going up to the rim and taking side trips to additional waterfalls increases the mileage to 9 miles round-trip. The water flows only in the early spring. Water in the desert provides habitat for many potential wildflower species. Climbing up to the high desert steppe increases the potential varieties. Additional species may be found at a second stop at the Painted Hills.
Gear:
Bring sturdy shoes for the rocky ground of the canyon floor and watersocks or hiking sandals and poles for climbing the waterfall. Sunscreen, hats, light colored long sleeves/pants for potential bushwacking in brush, a sack lunch, $5 for the driver, and money for a potential after-hike stop in Mitchell. Be prepared for tick prevention (also wear light colored clothing to see them!) since we are hiking in brush.
