Description:
The plan is to put in and paddle around the perimeter of the lake to the hot
springs where we will stop for snacks. We will hang at the hot springs before
heading back. (The hot springs are “rustic” with no permanent pools). The
water is typically clear and you may see lots of waterfowl/birds and some
fish. Aside from the hot springs, the water temperatures can be brisk!
Paulina Lake is located at 6,331’ above sea level, within the the still-active
Newberry Volcano—not unlike its more famous cousin, Crater Lake. The
volcano’s summit contains a seventeen square mile caldera, also referred to
as Newberry Crater, formed as the top of the volcano collapsed when the
magma chamber beneath emptied out. The caldera may have originally
contained one large lake but more recent eruptions divided the crater into
two unique, crystal-clear lakes, Paulina and East Lakes. Neither lake receives
water from an inlet stream and both lakes rely on rain, snowmelt, and hot
springs for water.
When considering signing up for this event, please know that the wind on the lake can pick up later in the afternoon which may make stand-up paddling a bit more challenging. Think about whether this matches your fitness level.
Required: a wearable life jacket, a whistle or sound device and a
Waterway Access Permit (in 2026, the law was expanded to include boats
under 10 feet and applies to stand-up paddleboards (SUPs), kayaks, rafts,
and their inflatable versions)
Other Gear: sunscreen, bug spray, hat, water, snacks, lunch, $ for
carpooling or food afterwards, dry bag, change of clothes, swim suit, towel,
layered clothing, personal first aid supplies, NW forest pass or Interagency
pass for parking.
