Iron Mountain and Cone Peak Loop
When: Monday, July 14. All day loop hike of about 7 miles with an elevation gain of 1,860 ft. Considered moderately difficult.
Info: Meet at HTCC to carpool at 6:00am, leaving by 6:30am. Early start due to about a two hour drive to the trailhead. A small parking lot fills up fast. Approximate return to Sunriver of 5pm. Bring $5 for carpool drivers and extra for a snack stop on the way back. Also we will have a cooler in a car for anyone who wants to bring a cold drink after the hike.
Description: Iron Mountain is the crown jewel of the Santiam Foothills. It offers views of all the large mountains in the Cascade range. We will begin during the cooler hours of the morning with a climb to a platform with stunning 360 degree views at the top of Iron Mountain. Narrow rocky trail in places. We will then continue over to the meadows of Cone Peak. Depending on timing the hike is known for wildflowers.
Gear: Bring essential hiking gear, sturdy hiking boots, hiking poles, sunscreen, bug/tick spray, plenty of water, lunch and snacks.
