Kayak/Paddle on Mirror Pond / Drake Park

When:  Thursday, June 11, 2024.  10:30 am - 1 pm

Meet at 10:30am at the Drake Park “Tubing Takeout” area, directly across

from 542 NW Riverside Blvd, Bend 97703.

For parking, there is free 4hour street parking alongside Drake Park. Try to

park as close to the launch as possible. If you prefer to drop your gear first,

the leader will have a designated dropoff spot at the shuttle stop near the

shoreline launch ramp. After dropping gear, move your car to street parking

and walk back.

For inflatables, the leader will have two electric pumps available to help

inflate boards if needed. We’ll spend about 20 minutes getting boards

inflated and gear organized before getting on the water by 11:00am.

Description:

1.5 – 2 hour paddle.  Easy to Intermediate.

Join us for a relaxed kayak excursion through the heart of Bend, beginning

in the iconic Drake Park. This historic riverside park is lined with oldgrowth

ponderosa pines, wide lawns, and calm stretches of the Deschutes that open

into the reflective waters of Mirror Pond.

We’ll launch from the Drake Park shoreline and paddle upstream toward the

Colorado Avenue Bridge. This section has a gentle current that’s easy to

manage at a steady, conversational pace. After reaching the bridge, we’ll

turn and enjoy a smooth downstream glide back through the park.

From there, we’ll loop around Mirror Pond, exploring its historic homes, calm

natural shoreline, and postcardworthy views. The full route covers

approximately 2.0–2.5 miles, depending on how much of the pond we

choose to explore.

Gear: Required PFD (life preserver), whistle, sun screen, bug repellant, hat,

sun glasses, long sleeve shirt, towel, snacks, drinks, dry sac, Invasive

Species Permit.

Optional no-host lunch afterwards at The Lot food carts, located at 745 NW

Columbia St. The Lot is a few blocks away from Drake Park, about a 5-

minute walk or a 2-minute drive. After the paddle we’ll decide as a group

whether to go and grab a bite to eat.
