Mountain Biking: Black Rock Trail to Lava Lands Visitor Center

When:  11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 1, 2026

Info: Meet at the Sun Lava Trail trailhead off Circle 7 in Sunriver.  Parking is free in the adjacent gravel/dirt parking area. You’ll see the parking area just off Circle 7 where the Deschutes River Trail and the Sun-Lava Paved Path meet.

Description: This is an out and back ride of about 11.2 miles, 5.6 miles each way. We’ll ride the paved trail to the beginning of the Black Rock Trail and then follow the mountain bike trail up to Lava Lands Visitor Center, descending by the same route.  Riders will have the option to walk their bikes through the rock gardens.

There are no steep hills, just a gradual climb uphill to the Visitor Center and then a gradual downhill slope on the way back. We will gain about 300’ on the way up. Bring snacks or a lunch for a picnic at the Visitor Center.

Before you arrive for the ride, please read the guidelines for group rides here. If you need a visual reminder on commonly used bike signals, it’s available here.

Gear:

Bring your bike, bike lock, helmet (required), sunglasses, layered clothing, shoes for an easy hike, personal first aid supplies, sunscreen, bug spray, water, snacks and a bagged lunch.
