Kayak/Paddle at East Lake

When: Monday, August 10, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or later with an optional stop on the way home at Paulina Lake Lodge for food or beverages.

Info: Meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Village Bar and Grill parking lot. Please carpool if possible. Bring $3 for driver if carpooling. This site requires an Interagency Pass or Northwest Forest pass for the parking lot.

If you want to meet us there, we will be putting in at the Cinder Hill Boating Site North at 10:00 a.m. From Sunriver, take US-97 S to Paulina-East Lake Rd., (about 10 miles), then then 17.6 miles east on Paulina-East Lake Rd/Forest Service Rd. 21, then 0.5 miles north on Forest Road 2100-700.

You will be driving nearly all the way through the Cinder Hill Campground to get to the boat ramp and beach. There are two boat ramp sites at the campground; we’ll be putting in at the second one (north) which does NOT have a floating dock.

Description: The plan is to put in and paddle around the perimeter of the lake to a white pumice beach where we will stop for snacks. We will hang out on the beach and then head back. The water is typically very clear and you may see lots of waterfowl and some fish. Water temperatures can be brisk!

East Lake is 6,381 feet above sea level and is located within the the still- active Newberry Volcano—not unlike its more famous cousin, Crater Lake.

The volcano’s summit contains a seventeen square mile caldera, also referred to as Newberry Crater, formed as the top of the volcano collapsed when the magma chamber beneath emptied out. The caldera may have originally contained one large lake but more recent eruptions divided the crater into two unique, crystal-clear lakes, Paulina and East Lakes. Neither lake receives water from an inlet stream and both lakes rely on rain, snowmelt, and hot springs for water.

When considering signing up for this event, please know that the wind on the lake can pick up later in the afternoon which may make stand-up paddling a bit more challenging. Think about whether this matches your fitness level.

Required: a wearable life jacket, a whistle or sound device and a Waterway Access Permit (in 2026, the law was expanded to include boats under 10 feet and applies to stand-up paddleboards (SUPs), kayaks, rafts, and their inflatable versions)

Other gear: sunscreen, bug spray, hat, water, snacks, lunch, $ forcarpooling or food event afterwards, dry bag, change of clothes, swim suit, towel, layered clothing, personal first aid supplies, NW forest pass or Interagency pass for parking.
